OH MY GOD SHE’S SO FIERCE!
SHE’S SUPER FIERCE, RIGHT?
SO FIERCE!
I’M OUT OF VODKA TONIC!
ME TOO! BARTENDER! TWO VODKA TONICS! MAKE THEM SUPER FIERCE!
THEN LET’S DANCE!
LET’S WAIT UNTIL THEY PLAY BEYONCÉ!
OH MY GOD SHE’S SO FIERCE!
SHE’S TOTALLY FIERCE! SO ARE YOUR SHOES. OH MY GOD, I LOVE YOUR SHOES!
I KNOW, RIGHT! I CAN’T REALLY WALK IN THEM BUT THEY’RE CRAZY SUPER FIERCE!
I LOVE THEM!
THEY COST MORE THAN MY CAR!
THAT’S SO FIERCE!

This week I went to a funeral.

Sundays too my father got up early

and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,

then with cracked hands that ached

from labor in the weekday weather made

banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.

I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.

When the rooms were warm, he’d call,

and slowly I would rise and dress,

fearing the chronic angers of that house,

Speaking indifferently to him,

who had driven out the cold

and polished my good shoes as well.

What did I know, what did I know

of love’s austere and lonely offices?

.

And if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.

A place is only as good as the people in it.

He wakes up and looks at the ceiling for a while, wondering what woke him. A pressure in his bladder reminds him of how much water he ingested the night before. When he looks at the clock he reads that it’s 3 in the morning. It’s too early to get up for the day, but he really has to pee.

He rolls out of bed as quietly as possible, careful not to wake her.

On his way back from the bathroom he takes a second to look at her. She’s curled on her side, her hair spread about on her pillow like a halo.

She was the first person who talked to him when he was new to town.

He slips out of the back door as quietly as possible, gets into his car, and drives until his gas runs out.
